Ashton Ladies 2 v 0 Street Ladies

Ashton Ladies played host to Street Ladies in a 2nd v 3rd place contest at Bristol Manor Farm. On a sticky pitch the start of the match seen Ashton kick off on the front foot.

Some good play by both teams in the early exchanges seen Ashton take the lead through Edyta Sawon who finished well from distance past the diving Street goalkeeper.

Street had chances of their own, but the Ashton defence held strong throughout the first half.

Then things started to take a turn with the referee deciding a push on the back of a Street player warranted a penalty, followed by a yellow card and a Sin Bin for goal scorer Edyta Sawon, a decision that baffled many throughout the Creek Stadium. The resulting penalty was well saved by player of the match Keira Allan.

With more strange decisions for both teams by the referee including a red card for the Ashton Coach, the first half eventually finished 1-0 to Ashton Ladies.

H/T - 1-0

The second half seen Street come out looking for a quick equaliser and put pressure on the Ashton defence with attack after attack. Again, the defence held strong and yet another find save by Keira Allan, seen Allan bravely diving at the feet at the advancing Street player and taking a knock for her efforts.

Street didn’t give up and continued to attack and winning several corners but just couldn’t convert their chances.

From a Street corner, Ashton broke in a counter attack and Honey Ongley picked up the ball out wide on the right, beat her player and cut in to the box, Ongley’s shot was well saved in to the path of Edyta Sawon who from the edge of the box slotted the ball past the Street goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Street never gave up and continued to look for a goal to pull themselves back in to the match, but the Ashton defence stood strong and held out for the final whistle.

In summary, a great contest by two very good teams that could have been ruined by the referee but thankfully wasn’t. We wish Street the best of luck for the remainder of the season.

After the match manager Steve Ponsford had this to say, "This was probably the biggest match of the season for both teams".  "I thought we handled the match well and the players should hold the credit for getting this result". He continued "This win goes a long way for us in terms of how the season has panned out". "Two weeks without a match did concern us coaches and how this would affect the performance, but credit to the players for getting this result".
