Staplegrove 1 v 7 Ashton Ladies

Ashton Ladies travelled the M5 South to Staplegrove for a first meeting between the two sides in the league. After a stalemate between the two sides in the first 15 minutes Ashton broke the Staplegrove defence in a smart move finished by Honey Ongley.

Staplegrove soon equalised the scoreline after a corner and goalmouth scramble seen Staplegrove take advantage to slot the ball into the back of the net. Ashton came back quickly after the set back and Honey Ongley scored her second of the game outpacing the defence to put Ashton back in front. Ashton began to dominate the game in areas of the pitch and captain Rachel Pitts scored a worldie of a goal with a 30 yard top corner finish.

At the break and Ashton 3-1 to the good, Ashton came out battling in the second half and dominated the game playing up the slight hill, and soon enough the 4th goal followed by another worldie from Edyta Sawon who from out on the left, curled the ball into the far top corner. The worldies didn’t stop there, and it was Rachel and player of the match yet again from 25 yards outside the box firing into the top corner to get her second of the match.

The goals kept coming and from a Paige Ponsford free kick, Lainey Bartley latched on to the rebound off the post to slot in from close range to make is 6-1. The scoring finished with Paige Ponsford herself getting on the score sheet with a fine finish in to the bottom corner and the game finishing 7-1.

Manager Steve Ponsford had this to say after the match; “if you would have told me we would score 19 goals in two matches I would have laughed at you, but that’s what we have done and it’s credit to the players in both matches for doing that”. He continued; “Two wins on the bounce and 19 goals I am delighted. We have another long trip next weekend at Ilminster and we need to continue this form”. “We didn’t start well today, and we need to learn from that. The second half showed what we are about and we need make sure we start games with high tempo and play football”.
